Need Better Sleep? Meditate

Going to sleep is generally the highlight of my day.

Yesterday was no exception.. I decided to do a 30 minute workout before work. I worked 8 hrs, talking to people who are going through possibly one of the most difficult times of their lives. Just going through the work day is tiring enough!

Butt I didn’t stop there 🙂 I went to the gym with my sister & walked her through an upper body lift…..for 2 hrs… Of course I was tired and hangry after that whole ordeal. Then, just because I felt like I needed to decompress, did some yoga.

Needless to say- I was wiped tf out.

Despite how exhausted I was, I got in bed & had an overwhelming feeling of uneasy irritation. Like what? I’m so flippin tired why am I not relaxed? How do I have any energy left to be annoyed?! & at NOTHING?!?!?1!1?1!

I guess these types of things happen when we’re human.. But I needed to sleep ASAP. So I turned to one of the best discoveries I’ve ever made: ~meditation~. I’m still working on my mental strength & getting into meditations on my own..& last night it seemed like Mission Impossible. Thank you YouTube for guided meditation!!!

I put headphones in, took a few deep breaths, & played this Guided Meditation for Deep Relaxation. At first I was like ‘ugh this isn’t working’ … ‘STILL NOT RELAXED WTF’. But I’m not kidding, I was sleeping like a fat cat before the 15 minutes was up.

Rare photo of me in my true form 😉

I don’t remember falling asleep. I don’t remember a single nightmare. I woke up ready to take on another exhausting day full of rewarding interactions & exercise (maybe I’ll actually take today off, I haven’t decided..)

If you need a little help starting your journey to Dream Land, or just need to chill tf out after a long ass day, definitely give some guided meditations a try. We could all use some more relaxation in our lives!

If you need a laugh/want a translation of what actually goes on in your mind during meditation, check out this Honest Meditation 🙂

Breaking Bad: Work Habits Edition

Greetings earthlings! This blog post is brought to you by tired mental state & me thinking about ways to save my weary brain..

We’re all (generally speaking) creatures of habit. We love routine, it makes us feel normal.

Going to work at 9 am is my daily routine. Coming home between 4 & 5 pm is my daily routine. Sitting at my desk talking people through the process of a criminal case is my daily routine. Sitting….for hours… It’s making me go crazy. I love my job, & I don’t want to grow so entrenched in my routine that I start to resent it.

Since I’m finally able to wrap my head around my new routine, it’s time to take ownership of it! I haven’t been doing enough for me. I haven’t been taking my lunch hour or exploring the area around my office. & no one is stopping me from doing these things!! I’m not tied to my desk. I have the freedom to leave or take a break whenever I want…I just haven’t done it.

So today I decided I’m going to commit to myself. I’m going to change some of the habits that I’ve fallen into during my work day. Not some ‘use the stairs to keep ur waist slim :)’ or ‘leave the carbs at home for more energy lolz’ BS. More like- ‘take care of your mental state during work so you aren’t burned out & agitated when you leave your office’…

Here are my 2 Golden Commandments to myself:

  • I will eat my lunch away from my desk. Yeaaa…. I’m sick of staring at my damn computer screen while I eat. That shit is depressing & makes for mindless food consumption. I like to enjoy my food. I’m going to use the time I spend eating as a refresher. Even if I’m still sitting in my office, I’ll be physically seperated from my desk & that will do wonders for my mind.
  • I will take a walk. Fresh freakin air. What a wonderful thing…that I definitely need more of. I think I’ve been discouraged by the colder weather recently, but I forgot how great even a short walk can make me feel! I’m going to bring some warmth accessories to my office so I can’t be deterred by the crisp or chill- I’ll always be prepared 🙂

Peace of mind is an extremely important part of being healthy. As I’m sure we all know, it takes a lot more than exercise to create a happy life for your mind & body.. All of my fellow office workers- I hope yall can look at your own daily routine & see if you’re doing enough for you.

I think this is a reminder from the universe that I need to take care of me. We all need that reminder sometimes.. We fall off track, we get run down by routine. That’s not the focal point though- what is the focus is what we do when we realize we’re not doing the right things for ourselves.

Refocus. Set new standards for your daily routine. Throw some changes into the mix. Feel good about how you spend your days!!

Detoxifyin Myself

I’ve felt a little under the weather lately. Not in an ‘I have an illness’ way…more in an ‘whoa I don’t feel my best mentally or physically’ way..

The beginning of this week was when I felt the worst & decided to make an effort to fix this crappy feeling. I was sitting at my desk & felt completely wired yet exhausted at the same time. My eating over the past days had been shit, I wasn’t getting any satisfaction from my workouts, I was tired as hell… Being attentive to my body helped me realise something wasn’t right. I took a break from lifting (sad face) & focused more on tending to my body’s immediate needs (happy face).

Taking time to put things on pause & just breathe has been much needed.. My sister says this pic looks like I’m giving my soul away LOL nah fam, I got full control of that 😉

Ive also been trying to cut out processed foods & coffee from my daily routine. (yes, ik it sounds terrible but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do..)

Now that it’s Friday & I’m a few days into this restart, I feel really good! The things that are working well I’m going to continue (duh) & see how much more detoxed I can get. To me, making a change like this isn’t about anything complicated- it’s about paying attention, noticing…how do I feel after eating certain things? How do my days go when I do certain things?

More fruit & vegetables: pretty self explanatory.. I’m back on my salad flow. Getting creative with the foods I bring to work & planning for how hungry I’ll ACTUALLY be rather than pretending a smaller amount of food will suffice.

Breakfast: instant oatmeal with peanut butter & a ground cocoa/flax mix

Lunch: greens with beans, feta cheese, & seasoning
Coffee replacement: a large glass of ice water. I’ve been drinking it before even peeing for the first time in the morning & it’s actually made me feel really awake. More importantly, I didn’t tell myself I couldn’t have coffee…I just didn’t let myself think I need it..

Tea: What more is there to say?! Tea is the bomb! The variety of types, the soothing powers it has, the wonderful ness. Yea…basically. Also- tea is a good way to help ease your minds worries about a lack of caffeine. You’re not taking it away, you’re just having it in a less intense amount..

Vitamins: I decided to bite the bullet (or pills..) & go for a daily, guaranteed source of vitamins my body clearly is in desperate need of. I haven’t been able to give my body everything it needs- yet I’ve been taking so much out of myself by working out/working/being alive.. I’ve always been sort of skeptical about vitamins, but this change is way overdue. I’ve been taking the Shaklee Women’s Vitalizer pack of vitamins everyday & tbh I feel great. WHICH I JUST REMEMBERED THAT I FORGOT TO TAKE TODAY ….

Not sure if it’s a combination of everything I’ve been doing to refresh myself this week, but whatever it’s from I’m feelin it. If you’re feeling ‘bleh’, try some of these changes! It seems difficult but it really hasn’t been that hard.. I didn’t think about this as staying away from bad things, I’ve been thinking about it as doing more of what’s good. Positive change rather than negative change.

Start feelin good yall! Don’t deprive yourself of anything, just replace what you don’t need with more of what you do need 🙂 Live in abundance…maybe not in the ways you’d like (financially, materially, etc..) but in the ways you can directly control (happiness, energy, etc).

HAPPY FRIDAY

Rejoice, celebrate, run around in your underwear! 😀

We have all made it through the majority of the week.. Congratulations. Now get out there & do something you enjoy!

How to have a successful weekend:

  • wake up.. notice that it is not Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday
  • smile
  • don’t set an alarm (or do, idk you)
  • if youre putting a long work week behind you, take time to blow off some steam (in a safe, productive way of course)
  • keep up your weekly routines to a certain degree- that way Monday won’t be so rude

Basically, I think the weekends are a great opportunity to reset & let go of any stress that has built up. It’s also not a bad idea to do this throughout the week/each day, but we can be way more attentive to ourselves when we don’t have other work to tend to.

Just wanted to drop by with a reminder to relax. Take time for yourself. Do things you enjoy & that make you feel human. Have dessert (or an extra slice of pizza). TREAT YOSELF 😉

Just Breathe.. Right Now

Seriously, do it. It’s the middle of the week…maybe even the middle of your day. You have to breathe anyway in order to stay alive, so why not get something out of it?

I wanted to share a quick breathing practice I do when I’m feeling lost/anxious/confused/frazzled/off-balance/crappy/etc..

Put yourself in whatever position is available to you at the moment- sit, stand, lay, do a handstand, whatever suits your current location. Take a minute to close your eyes & just assess where you are mentally, emotionally, & physically. If you’re like “OK I think I’m on the edge of losing my mind” ….I’m right there with ya…pretty much every day of my life. I think my mind may be very lost & it’s possible it will never be found. But that’s a different story for another day.

Wherever you feel you are at this moment, try to be fully aware of yourself. How does your body feel? Are you hungry? Thirsty? Tired? Energized? What thoughts are running through your mind? Maybe there’s way too many to every process, that’s okay!

Take a deep inhale in through your nose for as many seconds as you can. Exhale for a few seconds longer. Try to do both through your nose, but don’t stress if you’re a mouth-breather…it happens.

While you’re taking deep breaths in & out, start to repeat a positive thought to yourself. Here’s an example: “I am going to have a successful day”, or “My life has a purpose”, or “I am letting go of today’s frustrations”, or anything else that you feel will brighten your mental space.

Once you feel like you’ve de-stressed, gotten rid of some anxiety, or get interrupted- restart your obligations with a calmer mind!

*** If taking some deep breaths isn’t enough for you to clear your mind & you’re under extreme stress- try Bach’s Rescue Pastilles. These little chews are all-natural stress relievers. They’ve helped me numerous times when I felt I was going to be taken over by anxiety.. So! I highly recommend them if you experience high stress/anxiety. You don’t have to do it alone 🙂
