Start Your New Year’s Resolution NOW

The new year is a crazy time. The world of fitness & health gets more frustrating than usual- filled with people jumping into new fitness routines, people who vowed to make this year their year

We’re all guilty of this ‘new year, new me’ mindset. We start making promises to ourselves to change all of the things we didn’t like about the previous year. We tell ourselves this year will be different- we’ll get in shape, we’ll run that marathon, we’ll finally try those healthy recipes that have been bookmarked for months..

Why do we need the number at the end of today’s date to change to allow ourselves to be better? What is the purpose of waiting? Maybe it helps us put off our own health without feeling guilty, because ‘once January comes around things will be different’…’the new year is when I’ll get serious about working out’.

Here’s my advice to you (& myself): START NOW!!!

Start researching. There’s a wealth of information for anyone new to the world of fitness & health & wellness. Here are some of my favorite user-friendly places to search:

  • BodyBuilding.com Sooooo many free workout plans, informative articles, exercise how-tos, & even supplements! This is literally how I built my lifting knowledge-base.
  • Fitness Blender I just discovered these guys. Their YouTube channel has a plethora of at-home workouts that range from interval cardio to weight training.
  • Bad Yogi Official Erin Motz is a seasoned yogi who totally gets that most people who do yoga are not experts… She has lots of free classes that make you feel good about your imperfect practice 🙂

It’s going to take some time before you find a fitness regime you really enjoy. It’s going to take even more time before your hard work is gratified with visible results.

Experiment with different types of exercise. Figure out the different things you’d like to try now.

Make small changes each day so you don’t shock your system & give up when it gets too difficult too fast.

Get a jump start on your 2016 goals!! Have fun, try new things, & never give up on yourself!

I hope you all have a wonderfully funky final week of 2015.

Black Friday Exercise to Free You from Your Guilt

Ah, the day after Thanksgiving..

Recovering from lots of food, lots of family time, & possibly lots of adult beverages. Maybe you’re still with your family & friends. Maybe you’ve already been up for hours because you enjoy battling for deals that you can also get from the comfort of your bed… Online shopping is the way to go yall.

I woke up feeling great this morning- my body is praising the lord for all of the food I gave it. However, my legs aren’t very happy since I made them finish a dreaded 5k yesterday morning. I know 3.2 miles isn’t very much for most people, but ya girl usually runs a single (1) mile if any at all.. So I’m pretty proud of myself for my under 30 min finishing time! rofl

It was actually a lot of fun (can’t believe I just said that). Turns out running outside with the fam isn’t as torturous as running on a treadmill..

Since most of us stuffed our faces all day yesterday, I came up with a quick & easy workout to get back on track. Anyone can do this fun little routine!!

Exercise 1: Sit & Reach

Start on the couch. While holding in your abdomen, sit up and reach for the remote. Repeat as many times as necessary. Try changing the channel & volume in intervals to get more work in!

Exercise 2: Leftover Dash

Start on the couch again. Now you’ll get up & walk to the kitchen. Fix yourself a plate of leftovers. Put the food in the oven/microwave. Walk back to the couch..& then back to the kitchen when your food is ready. Remember to take breaks!! This one can be tough.

Exercise 3: Glass Curl

This one requires a glass of water, tea, coffee, wine, whatever you prefer. Same starting position- on the couch.. Grip your glass & lift the glass to drink from it. Squeeze your bicep muscles while lifting & lowering the glass. Chiseled tank top arms here we come 😉

Stay persistent, & always practice safe sets!!

Enjoy this time of indulgence, your body deserves it. Too much deprivation never did anyone any good anyways! Besides, most of the food we’ve all eaten for Thanksgiving is relatively unprocessed & full of much-needed refueling nutrients. Guilt-free holidays 4 lyfe!

Bulletproof Coffee

Here’s how you can do for your coffee what it does for you; make it bulletproof.

I feel that coffee is best when you brew yourself a cup so you can enjoy the taste, rather than drinking it because you need it. But let’s be honest….some mornings/days getting out of bed feels like entering hell & coffee is the only thing that can bring you back. You need it to be bulletproof!

Making bulletproof coffee is super easy & actually adds to the health benefits inside your mug!

Brew your coffee as usual. Pour it into your favorite mug….or whatever mug happens to be clean..

Stir in a tablespoon or so of butter (organic/grass-fed butter has the most health benefits). You can also add coconut oil for a supercharged drink.

Better yet: blend the mixture!! The butter emulsified & creates a heavenly coffee energy drink..

Top it off with milk/vanilla/cinammon, whatever your usual coffee routine is. I drink my coffee black, but this is a superb alternative to cream. The coffee tastes less bitter but it’s flavor is unchanged, there are way less chemicals/added crap in butter, & it will give you extra energy rather than leading you to a crash. It’s a creamy cup of coffee goodness. How can you go wrong?!

   heaven in a mug
Ta-da! Now your coffee will not only help you stay alert, it will also help you burn fat throughout the day 😀 By providing your body with the healthy fats it needs, you’ll kickstart the fat burning potential of your body. The fat in the butter also helps you carry the caffeine longer. More energy, less crash!

It’s important to fuel your day in a way that benefits you- & this is a great place to start!

I’m sure there are tons of other variations of bulletproof coffee out in the universe. Let me know how you make yours, I’d love to try something new!!

Detoxifyin Myself

I’ve felt a little under the weather lately. Not in an ‘I have an illness’ way…more in an ‘whoa I don’t feel my best mentally or physically’ way..

The beginning of this week was when I felt the worst & decided to make an effort to fix this crappy feeling. I was sitting at my desk & felt completely wired yet exhausted at the same time. My eating over the past days had been shit, I wasn’t getting any satisfaction from my workouts, I was tired as hell… Being attentive to my body helped me realise something wasn’t right. I took a break from lifting (sad face) & focused more on tending to my body’s immediate needs (happy face).

Taking time to put things on pause & just breathe has been much needed.. My sister says this pic looks like I’m giving my soul away LOL nah fam, I got full control of that 😉

Ive also been trying to cut out processed foods & coffee from my daily routine. (yes, ik it sounds terrible but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do..)

Now that it’s Friday & I’m a few days into this restart, I feel really good! The things that are working well I’m going to continue (duh) & see how much more detoxed I can get. To me, making a change like this isn’t about anything complicated- it’s about paying attention, noticing…how do I feel after eating certain things? How do my days go when I do certain things?

More fruit & vegetables: pretty self explanatory.. I’m back on my salad flow. Getting creative with the foods I bring to work & planning for how hungry I’ll ACTUALLY be rather than pretending a smaller amount of food will suffice.

Breakfast: instant oatmeal with peanut butter & a ground cocoa/flax mix

Lunch: greens with beans, feta cheese, & seasoning
Coffee replacement: a large glass of ice water. I’ve been drinking it before even peeing for the first time in the morning & it’s actually made me feel really awake. More importantly, I didn’t tell myself I couldn’t have coffee…I just didn’t let myself think I need it..

Tea: What more is there to say?! Tea is the bomb! The variety of types, the soothing powers it has, the wonderful ness. Yea…basically. Also- tea is a good way to help ease your minds worries about a lack of caffeine. You’re not taking it away, you’re just having it in a less intense amount..

Vitamins: I decided to bite the bullet (or pills..) & go for a daily, guaranteed source of vitamins my body clearly is in desperate need of. I haven’t been able to give my body everything it needs- yet I’ve been taking so much out of myself by working out/working/being alive.. I’ve always been sort of skeptical about vitamins, but this change is way overdue. I’ve been taking the Shaklee Women’s Vitalizer pack of vitamins everyday & tbh I feel great. WHICH I JUST REMEMBERED THAT I FORGOT TO TAKE TODAY ….

Not sure if it’s a combination of everything I’ve been doing to refresh myself this week, but whatever it’s from I’m feelin it. If you’re feeling ‘bleh’, try some of these changes! It seems difficult but it really hasn’t been that hard.. I didn’t think about this as staying away from bad things, I’ve been thinking about it as doing more of what’s good. Positive change rather than negative change.

Start feelin good yall! Don’t deprive yourself of anything, just replace what you don’t need with more of what you do need 🙂 Live in abundance…maybe not in the ways you’d like (financially, materially, etc..) but in the ways you can directly control (happiness, energy, etc).

Coffee Scrub

Coffee scrubs. An aromatic way to give your body some well-deserved TLC, made from things you probably have laying around in your cupboards. …..Do people still use the word cupboard?? idk.

The star of this post is my younger, more creative sister…she found a rough recipe for a coffee scrub & made it her own. It’s a bit messy, but definitely worth the extra few minutes (if that) of clean up!

Here is what you’ll need:

  • as much coffee as you want/have
  • a teaspoon of vanilla
  • 2-3 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • a container for your scrub

Measure out the coconut oil. You may/may not look happier than my sister does here…

If it’s solid like ours is, microwave it for about 30 seconds & mix it to make sure it’s all liquid.

Mix in the vanilla extract.

Transfer the coffee to your container of choice. Then pour in the coconut oil/vanilla mixture.

Stir the scrub until all of the coffee looks wet. If you didn’t use enough oil, bows the time to add however much more you need. (We decided to add a capful of olive oil because it was easier than melting more coconut oil..)

I’d say the best place to use this is the shower, once or twice a week when you feel like starting fresh. It will get all over the shower walls but a few splashes of water will make everything clean again. My dad (who’s a plumber) doesn’t get mad when my sister & I use this scrub so it must be ok for the drain….if it wasn’t we would definitely hear about its clogging effects..

This coffee scrub will leave your skin soft & smooth. You can even skip the step of putting on lotion because the coconut oil will take care of that for you!

So wake up & scrub with coffee!!! I hope you & your skin enjoy this caffeinated exfoliating mix!

A Berry Delicious Smoothie

Ha…See what I did there??

Here’s a quick, healthy smoothie you can make for breakfast, lunch, a snack, pre-workout, post-workout, whenever! All you’ll need is a banana, some strawberries, blueberries, & whatever fresh/frozen fruit you can get your hands on!

I used fresh berries because we had an abundance of them in the house & I figured why not freeze them for a smoothie?

I folded the larger bag in half when I froze it so I would remember to use the berries in 2 smoothies.

Frozen fruit is a great option because it saves $$ & lets you enjoy your favourite fruit even when it’s out of season!

Fill your blender with about a cup of water (or milk if you want it creamy). A smaller amount of liquid will keep the mixture thick like an actual smoothie.

Now it’s time to throw in your fruits.

(it looks like more water because the fruit displaces it)

If this is your breakfast/pre-workout snack- keep your coffee or tea close..

I added chia seeds & vanilla protein to my mix. If there’s anything else you desire, there’s no time like the present. Add away!!

It’s blending time

If your mini blender is anything like mine, you’ll have to help the whole blending thing actually happen…annoying side effect of getting a cheap blender.

Enjoy your healthy, delicious little creation! Get creative with the next one 😉

Adding smoothies to your regular diet is a great way to give yourself more energy. Being consistent is a little difficult at first, but once you start feeling the benefits in your body it’ll be worth it! Having more fruits & veggies will be a good thing.

Coffee Smoothie

How can you go wrong with a coffee smoothie? Two of the best thing mornings have to offer in one place… You’re welcome.

So what will you need?

  • coffee (shocking, I know) – about 1/2 cup brewed, or throw in 1/4 cup of grinds
  • 1/2 cup vanilla Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 banana, or the whole thing if it’s small
  • 3-4 ice cubes

If you’re using coffee you brewed, try to let it cool before using it for your smoothie.

I used way too much coffee…don’t follow in my footsteps. If you do, you’ll have a mixed coffee drink- not a smoothie. Still great, but not quite what I was going for..

Blend it all together in whatever you may use for smoothie-making until the  ice chunks are gone. Feel free to add anything else you want that will make a more enjoyable experience for you.

Enjoy this protein, caffeine, deliciousness filled breakfast (or snack/pre-workout)!!!

Have a wonderful day 🙂
